# Daily Updates Instead of Mirror Servers: Why We Are Switching

[ Home ](https://www.linuxfabrik.ch/en) [ Blog ](https://www.linuxfabrik.ch/en/blog) Daily Updates Instead of Mirror Servers: Why We Are Switching

The same software state on test and prod for a week, then the next step: our mirror servers served us well with this concept for a long time. The current IT security situation forces a rethink, so we are switching all Linux servers to daily updates straight from upstream and shutting down our mirror servers on 2026-12-31.

## Why we are switching

Until now, many of the Linux servers we look after got their software from our mirror servers. The idea: test and prod environments receive the same software state with a time offset, and that state then stays consistent for seven days. Problems show up on test first, before they reach prod.

AI has noticeably changed the threat landscape in IT security. Vulnerabilities are found much faster today and exploited within hours of disclosure. Over the last few weeks we had to update the mirror servers out of turn almost daily, because important security updates could not wait. A software state that is deliberately frozen for a week simply no longer fits the times.

## What changes

**Daily updates.** Over the next few days we are switching the environments to daily updates (including a reboot where needed).

**Test and prod at the same time.** Test environments receive their updates at the same time as the prod environments. A staggered preview on test no longer exists.

**Software straight from the source.** The servers get their packages directly from upstream again, for example from Rocky Linux, Icinga or our package repository [repo.linuxfabrik.ch](https://repo.linuxfabrik.ch/), and no longer through our mirror servers.

## What this means for you

We take care of the switch, there is nothing you need to do.

**Costs.** We no longer charge for the mirror servers starting November 2026. They will be shut down for good on **2026-12-31**.

**Firewalls.** If you only allow outgoing traffic from your servers to our mirror servers, you now need to allow the repositories of the distribution and the other vendors. If we run your firewall, we take care of it.

**Automatic reboots.** If you have systems where an automatic reboot would be a problem, get in touch with us.
